The New York City Hash House Harriers
Description
Founded in the Spring of 1984.
Schedule
As of 2020, the New York City Hash meets every Wednesday evening at 7PM all year round. No more flipflopping between Sundays in Winter and Wednesdays in Summer. Special events include the Red Dress Run and the Marathon Hash Weekend. The Annual General Meeting is usually held on the first weekend in May, if the current committee could get around to organizing one.
History of the NYC H3
New York City Hash House Harriers History
In the best Hash tradition, accounts of the NYCH3’s founding are generally misleading, incomplete, or wrong. The 500th Run Commemorative Newsletter history names the wrong founders, misspells their names, and leaves out a number of early officers. So to get the story straight, I consulted directly with Lee Carlson, now of Washington, D.C.
From my own observation, Lee was the driving force behind the early NYCH3, tirelessly promoting it throughout the tri-state region. Lee’s hashing history was set out in the July 1984 issue of Winged Foot, the newsletter of the New York Athletic Club. According to Lee, he first encountered the Hash in Singapore during the mid-sixties when he was a student there. During the ’80’s Lee hashed as a visitor in numerous Asian hashes, while calling Summit H3 his home Hash. The article clearly had been written some time before the founding of the NYCH3, since it does not mention the NYCH3 and it was about the time of the article that the NYCH3 was founded.
While Lee was running with Summit, Terry Peek was posted to the Australian Consulate in New York. “The Pale Whale”, as he was known, he was an enthusiastic hasher, running slowly and drinking copiously. Several Hash social functions were held at the Consulate as a result of his association with the Hash. While Lee was running with Summit and considering organizing a Hash in New York City, Terry entertained similar notions. Terry organized a new Hash in Rye called the Big Apple Hash on May 5, 1984. The Big Apple Hash ran five times with packs of three to five runners.
Neither Lee nor Terry were aware of each other’s efforts. In August 1984 Lee set a Summit Hash in Central Park which he advertised heavily at the New York Athletic Club and elsewhere. This run was used to promote the idea of a New York City Hash running in New York City. Shortly thereafter Lee and Terry joined efforts, and a new Hash was formed with the title, “New York City Hash House Harriers”.
The role of the New York Athletic Club parallels the Selangor Club’s role in Kuala Lumpur. The NYAC provided some of the original members, such as John Diesum, but the non-competitive nature of the runs proved too much and the NYAC’s participation waned.
Initially New York City varied its runs between Saturdays and Sundays, with the odd mid-week run thrown in, depending upon the Hashers’ schedules. After several years the current schedule of Wednesdays in the summer, Sundays in the winter, was established. Packs varied wildly in size from one week to the next in the early days. Twenty people was a crowd, seven or eight was not unusual. At least one run on the upper West Side drew only two runners, and was canceled for lack of interest. The hare (Peter Callaway), co-hare (Martha Barnes Callaway), and two-person pack (Lee Carlson and Keith Kanaga) retired immediately to the bar.
Packs now consistently number in the thirties during the summer, and the twenties in winter.
Some other notable personalities involved in the early New York City Hash included Yvonne “Kiwi” Smith, now retired from active Hashing in New Zealand; Martha (Barnes) Callaway, currently best known for Willie C; Linda (Friberg) Bradish, now resident in Vermont with her husband, and ardent hasher, Steve; and Michael Wimbs, who has disappeared. A certain P.H. Dippides graced the mast head of the newsletter for several years, reflecting Lee Carlson’s bent sense of humor and alter ego.
From the beginning there has always been good comaraderie and reciprocity between the New York (i.e., Westchester County) and New York City Hashes. In the 1970’s, New York Hash held occasional hashes in Manhattan during the summer. Both chapters have supported each other, and there are many joint members of the two organizations.
Major New York City H3 annual events currently include the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in May; the Marathon Day Run, ending at the 23rd mile of the Marathon; the Post Marathon Recovery Run, held the day after the Marathon with taxis for who actually ran the 26+ miles; New Year’s Eve at Laird and Christine’s; and HOBARD (Hash Office Bearers Annual Reunion Dinner), a black tie affair.

Wednesday June 6, 2012 NYCH3 # 1484 Start 96th & Broadway On In : Pat Ryan’s Hare: Devo Wednesday was Devo’s Famous Annual UWS summertime hash. You can always count on these hashes to deliver a few things – unexpected shiggy, a little uptown hoodness, On-in at Pat Ryan’s, and Devo’s feartfelt farewell to the city and it’s hash. Yes, despite promising to move far far away at the end of last summer, he’s still kicking around, though he does expect to be gone sometime this year. So if you missed out, tough shit. Looks like you’ll have to wait for next summer. Pack started at 96th and Broadway, then headed west into Riverside park. A check sent those following trail down a hill and through a few games of soccer, volleyball and basketball, while the rest of the pack followed the wide open running trail 10 yards off to the side. It’s a narrow park is what I’m getting at. A quick blast through Columbia’s campus and down through the Theological Seminary and Sakura park we found ourselves at the chicken eagle split. Can’t speak to the chicken, but the eagle involved a lot of slick mud hills, waist high grass, and thorn bushes. After passing through one of NYC’s remaining shiggy sanctuaries, we got dragged up and down the hills that make up west Manhattan north of 130th, through City College’s campus (pausing briefly to get boned by a back check at the bottom of a long stairwell), and then bombed down Broadway to the finish. In keeping with the chrono-loop theme of the trail, zero new...NYCH3 # 1483
Wednesday May 30, 2012 NYCH3 # 1483 Hares : Joey P, Hot Rod, Just Nathan On In – No Idea bar On Wednesday, May 30th at 7:15ish PM, we embraced a little thing called the hash. It was not with a broseph tap on the back or an ass-out hug that we welcomed our drinking and running club, nay… it was a full on bear hug, the kind you give when someone has a pitcher of beer for you. Because we had many pitchers on this glorious day. Joey P, Hot Rod, and Just Nathan hared a trail that included a NYC-henge worthy drink check involving Shake Shack and various other libations. Fortunately for those who were lactose intolerant, the on-in was just a hop skip, and jump away at No Idea. Hugging and high fives ensued. We always love a good virgin, and tonight we had plenty! Trevor, Natalia, Lisa, Patrick, and Lauren all good some sweet lovin’ from the hash. And they will get lovin’ again. Cheeto Shit was a welcomed visitor and we gave him the secret handshake. No hugs for him. Just Jenn apparently did a pinky swear with her virgin and helped her drink beer, so we gave her another – and she liked it long time. Just Trevor, ah Just Trevor. He knew not about wearing new shoes, so Pecker Wrecker the stalwart wrecker of wang drank in his steed. Hugging and bonding (bondage?) happened afterwards. Mean Jean, the Down Down Machine didn’t get enough and wanted props, snaps, and high fives for solving a check...NYCH3 #1482
TRAILER TRASH / A DEVILSIH NIGHT / HIJINKS ON THE HIGHLINE / VILLAGE FEEBLE / HELLO JELLO A CHOICE ON-IN / It was a historic night May 23rd, in Manhattan, for the hash. An evening of ‘lasts.’ Change was in the air. The recent cold-spell had given way to pure Spring weather that demanded shorts of everyone. The city’s hockey club hosted the NJ Devils for a playoff contest at MSG. Our story begins ten blocks to the south, at the Trailer Park Lounge on the Northeast corner of 8th avenue and 23rd street. Some idiot posted on the website that the start was between 7th and 8th, which is technically true but generated hard-feelings in those who regard middle to approximate ‘dead center.’ TPL is a fantastic place for Southerners to wear khakis and their baseball caps in that certain way, and be complete assholes. There’s a bunch of kitsch on the walls and ceilings and the seating is like 70s retro Holiday Inn. Hashers marveled at this monument to duplicity and depravity and took mental notes. Then they hit the bricks for the ‘Visitors and Virgins.’ This was a sight to behold, as nearly half in the group of 40+ were first-timers. A few of them were hot, which led to inevitable extra instructions offered by kind Samaritans. The trail was splendid. The hare declared that marks would be rare, and this proved true. But it was a simple course so that its few checks were quickly solved by the committed frontpackers and the remaining hashers benefited from the resulting pack marks. The highlight was the running on The High Line. Not once but twice–first, at the northern...NYCH3 #1481
Start: 72nd & Central Park West Well this was the location given for the start of the hash but alas the group were meeting slightly to the left. This confused many an experienced Hasher especially since the Hares put the mark in the middle of the street. Some decided to check out the two other groups of runners meeting in the same location at the same time, Front Runners being one of them. Those groups however are not at all as fun as they don’t have beer and people talk about marathons and times.. and all that other non-alcohol jargon. Well people eventually found the hares and off we went for the 147*th run of the New York City Hash House Harriers. Note … no beer stop, complaint number one. Especially considering the humidity that day. A nice shot would have been welcome. I have no doubt that some people took a water stop or two along the way, possibly at the reservoir. I think everybody feels that slight bit of dread we you come up to the reservoir wondering… F**K.. how long will they make us go around this f***ing thing. We came to the on-in Reid’s Tavern at 92nd and 2nd. Seriously… I thought the stench of Hashers was bad last week. This week it was even worse and most likely going to get worse as the summer wears on. The q to use the toilets for changing is getting longer each week too. ENJOY YOUR NATURAL ODOUR!! It also generally clears the pub of non-hashers. A great pub I have to say,...NYCH3 #1480
NYC #1480 A fine strong number that is. I always prefer even hash numbers.. for some reason I always feel a better sense of accomplishment after doing one. Now down to business. Pre-lube may have been epic for those who went, alas, I was not one of them. 3 Sheets Saloon on 3rd, a fine establishment if ever there was one so long as you are a frat boy who likes beer.. ( Yes, please!! ). The hash itself started at West 4th Street and 6th.. chalk talk took an age, we will blame the late arrivals from pre-lube who decided to take their time. And then off we went.. the trail was set in a fine powdery substance of the edible variety. We went this way and that way. Some confusion was had deciding if 3 dots in a row was left or right.. best to check both ended up being the only option. I myself only recently found out that tennis balls are used to provide the perfect flour circles…( If you want more Hare know-how.. set trail!! We have lots of slots available over the coming months ). There was the usual trip through Union Square providing the chorus "Are you?".. with few responses. We eventually found our way thanks to some FRBs. I am still of the opinion that Fast American Dave has a teleporter…running… running.. Boom! he appears out of nowhere. We made our way to the on-in Barrow’s Pub, Barrow St. and Hudson. Another fine establishment where beer was served a plenty. Not a dry t-shirt was in the house. The sweaty stench...NYCH3 #1479, AGM
