The New York City Hash House Harriers
Description
Founded in the Spring of 1984.
Schedule
As of 2020, the New York City Hash meets every Wednesday evening at 7PM all year round. No more flipflopping between Sundays in Winter and Wednesdays in Summer. Special events include the Red Dress Run and the Marathon Hash Weekend. The Annual General Meeting is usually held on the first weekend in May, if the current committee could get around to organizing one.
History of the NYC H3
New York City Hash House Harriers History
In the best Hash tradition, accounts of the NYCH3’s founding are generally misleading, incomplete, or wrong. The 500th Run Commemorative Newsletter history names the wrong founders, misspells their names, and leaves out a number of early officers. So to get the story straight, I consulted directly with Lee Carlson, now of Washington, D.C.
From my own observation, Lee was the driving force behind the early NYCH3, tirelessly promoting it throughout the tri-state region. Lee’s hashing history was set out in the July 1984 issue of Winged Foot, the newsletter of the New York Athletic Club. According to Lee, he first encountered the Hash in Singapore during the mid-sixties when he was a student there. During the ’80’s Lee hashed as a visitor in numerous Asian hashes, while calling Summit H3 his home Hash. The article clearly had been written some time before the founding of the NYCH3, since it does not mention the NYCH3 and it was about the time of the article that the NYCH3 was founded.
While Lee was running with Summit, Terry Peek was posted to the Australian Consulate in New York. “The Pale Whale”, as he was known, he was an enthusiastic hasher, running slowly and drinking copiously. Several Hash social functions were held at the Consulate as a result of his association with the Hash. While Lee was running with Summit and considering organizing a Hash in New York City, Terry entertained similar notions. Terry organized a new Hash in Rye called the Big Apple Hash on May 5, 1984. The Big Apple Hash ran five times with packs of three to five runners.
Neither Lee nor Terry were aware of each other’s efforts. In August 1984 Lee set a Summit Hash in Central Park which he advertised heavily at the New York Athletic Club and elsewhere. This run was used to promote the idea of a New York City Hash running in New York City. Shortly thereafter Lee and Terry joined efforts, and a new Hash was formed with the title, “New York City Hash House Harriers”.
The role of the New York Athletic Club parallels the Selangor Club’s role in Kuala Lumpur. The NYAC provided some of the original members, such as John Diesum, but the non-competitive nature of the runs proved too much and the NYAC’s participation waned.
Initially New York City varied its runs between Saturdays and Sundays, with the odd mid-week run thrown in, depending upon the Hashers’ schedules. After several years the current schedule of Wednesdays in the summer, Sundays in the winter, was established. Packs varied wildly in size from one week to the next in the early days. Twenty people was a crowd, seven or eight was not unusual. At least one run on the upper West Side drew only two runners, and was canceled for lack of interest. The hare (Peter Callaway), co-hare (Martha Barnes Callaway), and two-person pack (Lee Carlson and Keith Kanaga) retired immediately to the bar.
Packs now consistently number in the thirties during the summer, and the twenties in winter.
Some other notable personalities involved in the early New York City Hash included Yvonne “Kiwi” Smith, now retired from active Hashing in New Zealand; Martha (Barnes) Callaway, currently best known for Willie C; Linda (Friberg) Bradish, now resident in Vermont with her husband, and ardent hasher, Steve; and Michael Wimbs, who has disappeared. A certain P.H. Dippides graced the mast head of the newsletter for several years, reflecting Lee Carlson’s bent sense of humor and alter ego.
From the beginning there has always been good comaraderie and reciprocity between the New York (i.e., Westchester County) and New York City Hashes. In the 1970’s, New York Hash held occasional hashes in Manhattan during the summer. Both chapters have supported each other, and there are many joint members of the two organizations.
Major New York City H3 annual events currently include the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in May; the Marathon Day Run, ending at the 23rd mile of the Marathon; the Post Marathon Recovery Run, held the day after the Marathon with taxis for who actually ran the 26+ miles; New Year’s Eve at Laird and Christine’s; and HOBARD (Hash Office Bearers Annual Reunion Dinner), a black tie affair.

Polar Bear Hash
Photo Credit: Kyle Gorjanc 1/18/2015 Polar Bear Hash BH3 #759 NYCH3 #1620 Hare: Cheeky Bastard (LIVE!!) On In: Peggy O’Neill’s Scribe: Six Inches, Ladies All our rain are belong to you. Holy crap, hashers. We were fresh off the plane from a sunny week in Jamaica (the actual Jamaica, not the one in Queens) and We thought it’d be nice to continue Our pleasant runnings and swimmings and drinkings that We’d been up to all week. So We came to the Polar Bear Hash. How much different could the weather be? Apparently 30 in Jamaica and 30 in New York are two completely different things. Being the American, We just assumed that the rest of the world followed along with Us. It makes Us wonder what the British mean when they call it a pint! We mean, how big is it when they do it, you know? So, the day was rain. Everyone risked drowning while crossing the street, just to get to Peggy’s. Actually, that was just to get out of the subway. The Hashers stood in Peggy’s and eyed each other, seeing who was badass enough to run the trail that wasn’t yet laid. Also, CPA asked who was running. And that’s how we really knew. CPA is quite clever, and his method was much more reliable than the previously mentioned eyeing. Cheeky Bastard took off to lay the trail. Speedo Gonzalez gave the chalk talk. He was near a bit of chalk, but nowhere near outside where these things generally take place. There were many HINO (Hashers In Name Only) who remained behind to make sure that...NYCH3 #1586
Date: 5/21/14 Hares: Whistle Bitch and Doggie Erectus Start: Bleeker Street Bar On In: TriBeCa Tavern Write-ups are BACK So, today was a special day. We all remember Whistle Bitch’s virgin trail, all those years ago (2013) on a fateful night in Brooklyn. We inferred that she would be a good enough hasher. Tonight she completed the metamorphosis, got into the back of a cab with Doggie Erectus, and squeezed out a cute little 3.25 mile trail. Like many of our first times, this one started awkwardly for Whistle Bitch and her older, seasoned partner. They left the Bleecker Street Bar and started up in a cab, dutifully bag hagging, through TriBeCa, when the cabbie kicked them onto the street. They handled it well; many of us have been there. It can be hard to perform, especially if you’ve been thinking about it for a whole week. The drink check was expertly handled. Your narrator, along with Geordi LaForeskin, brought the pack to FLAVORTOWN with DeLish brand cranberry juice AND lemonade, both seasoned with Devil’s Spring Vodka, Guy Fieri Style. Yes, New Jersey’s finest Vodka for Whistle Bitch. The pack enjoyed these Duane Reade brand concoctions on the corner of West Street and North Moore. The pack finished up on TriBeCa Tavern. It’s cool the Hares got the okay beforehand. Songs/Accusations: Hymm to the Hares: Whistle Bitch and Doggie Erectus Visitors: Just Alex: Australia by way of Tokyo (All Australians, born illegitimate). Virgins: Christy, Raj and Alex came thanks to the expert caress of Chokes on Dick. What a Cunt! Made Ginger Come; Justin made Himself Come. Just Sean...Scotland Day R*n NYCH3 #1476
Scotland Day R*n NYCH3 #1476 When: Sunday, April 15, 2012, 3pm Hares: Legs Lesley, Mean Jean, Fire in the Piehole Start/Pre-lube: Caledonia Scottish Pub – 2nd Ave bet. 83rd St & 84th St On-In: Danny & Eddie’s, 1st Ave & 86th St Scribe: Eager for Beaver JMs in the Circle: T*t Totaller and Pimpy Longstocking This thing you hold in your hands – not that thing, this thing – is called a write-up. In ancient times, as far back as April of last year, so-called scribes would be chosen to write about the hash in which she or he just participated. This story would summarize events at the start, on trail, and at the on in. Someone with access would use a device called a copy (or even more ancient Xerox) machine to print the story on something our ancestors called paper. These copies would be left conspicuously at the on-in for recovering hashers to kill time between beers. While this lost art has been revived especially for today’s hash, I wouldn’t expect to see another actual write-up for at least another year. I’ve been told that we’ve celebrated the end of Tartan Week ever since the English majority in the hash allowed Scots to join – 8 years, apparently. Historically, the pack would prelube at St. Andrews Pub, so-called, “The only Scottish Restaurant and Bar in New York City”. This year, however, we met the hares at Caledonia Scottish Pub (possibly “The only Scottish Pub in New York City”?) on the Upper East Side. The trait that both venues share – really fucking expensive beer – ensured that...NYCH3 #1495, HALT R*N!
Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 7pm NYCH3 #1495, HALT R*N! Hares: Just Steve & Flabbio The night temperature was perfect, warm but not too sweaty. The pack set off for this HALT run – hashers against long trails which promised no more than two miles and stuck faithfully to that gauge. But its particularity was the way each element of the trail meshed with the next in the beauty that it held. First we were treated to bright orange on a glass skyscraper on the edge of the water, put there by the setting sun, albeit the river was East. Then up the steps to well-known Waterside and down again with the characteristic horn of a ship pulling out from the marina. Not the Health and Racquet ship, a big one. We ran alongside the river south in the new round Manhattan park with round metal grid tables where people were having their cocktail glasses of wine. The earthen paths were separated from the concrete one by narrow bands of yellow ribbon. Then a little later we crossed the road (and the FDR) into Stuyvesant Town. I clammed up. I was afraid. The trail was very well marked but sporadic, to provide a challenge. It was ok but I didn’t breathe easily till the other side. And the trail did take all the twists and turns. That is how we came upon the absolutely beautiful substantial burgeoning fountain in the center of the park. And then again back down into town, on eighteenth street. I looked because we passed three lovely houses niched on the south side of that street. ...NYCH3 # 1492 – Birthday Hash
