NASS #147

Saturday, 15 August 2009  (This is a Saturday) Outerborough /NASS Joint Hash NASS #147 Hares: Gagin’ on the Llama and Assranger Start: The Patriot: Church and Chambers On In: Moonshine, somewhere in Red Hook by the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel toll plaza Scribe: Bulldozer    As the pack assembled in and outside The Patriot on a sunny, warm Saturday afternoon on the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, there was a feeling of those long ago vibes of peace, love, music and whatnot. But as The Dude would say, “New shit has come to light.” Little did we know as we clogged the sidewalk and waited for Splat to give us the “directions” we would need to solve this trail that we would hear the phrase uttered “When I find that hare, I’m going to punch him in the mouth.”  Yes, this particular hash turned out to be less like Woodstock and more like Altamont, or “Black Hawk Down.  As it turns out, just like those Army Rangers we should have taken out night vision goggles and water. The better to see those invisible chalk marks.              Ultimately Splat elected to leave the beer- cooled comfort of The Patriot and the barmaid with huge tracts of land to give us the low-down. Three and you are on and there would be a beer check. Yeah, this was looking good. Then the news there would be on YBF# check. Huh? Yes it meant go back # number of marks to locate the true trail. Despite the late start, the temps and humidity were doing a tango into the high 80’s together, or so...

NAWW #186

NAWW # 186 January 21st, 2009 Hare: Gabe On In: Peter Dillion’s Pub Scribe: Just Leo It took an extra cold January evening to bring a pack of ultra masochistic hashers to the original Winter Wednesday Hash. Walking into the bar, I was surprise to see not only a group of pre-lubing hashers, but also a much larger group of civilians enjoying the warmth of the pub and the chill of PBR?!?!? Our illustrious hare Gabe quickly informed us that the trail was "not too long" but would not disclose whether the trail was A-to-A or not. His cover was quickly blown by a waitress inquiring about the distance of our r*ns and asking when she should expect us.  I remember the pack heading west. Unfortunately that’s all I remember, likely due to countless fanny packs causing temporary amnesia.  Yes, we passed through Times Square. The next thing I remember was reaching an unmarked check around 68th st and 3rd ave.  The worst thing you can do in this situation is follow the advice of a delivery guy on a bike frantically pointing south. Hashers have never been known to possess that common sense thing.  We gave up hope finding a mark after 5 blocks.  The hash gods punished us with a red light at every intersection.  Needless to say, we were glad to be back in the bar to sink our sorrows. The following down downs were administered: * Our hare Gabe * Every hasher in attendance for showing up on a cold Wednesday evening. YES! Pizza was had and beer flowed freely until hash cash ran...

NAWW #183

NAWW # 183              Wednesday, 10 December 2008   Start Subway Inn just North of Bloomingdale’s On In: Dillon’s Pub on 40th just East of Lex Hare: Kendra               weather: drippy   And lo, a writeup has appeared. And the run it was good and warm and wet, as promised.  From Bloomingdales up north with very hard to see orange marks to about 86th and into the Park, with, to everyone’s delight, flour.  It shone bright.  Then on South and out onto Fifth Avenue past the Plaza and the first of the also promised Christmas stores – Bergdorf’s with various symphonies on white in the windows.  And then trail also hit Rock Center and Grand Central – welcome shelter and the only place a mark was left before Dillon’s Pub on 40th off Lex.  The historical onin of the very first NAWW.   Very many thanks go to Kendra for getting such a great sized pack in the rain, last minute but effective ruse though she did use in the email.  (Note, all you subsequent late start declaring bastards).  Downdowns were conducted in the dulcet tones of Splat who did know quiet songs but was jogged into audibility by the visitor from Boston.  No newbies.  The highlight was when 4 such were drafted from the clientele, and yes, they could drink.  Welcome back to all of them. And kudos to the pizza which did not slither all over the place.  This write up is a pitch to all of you young and sharp Committee Officer title bearing wannabees.  NAWW needs  – two haberdashers (you get to design something), – a second...

NAWW #174 (St. Patrick’s Day)

NAWW #174 Hare: Basil Start: St Patrick’s Cathedral, 5th Ave On-In: Dive 75 (75th & Broadway) Scribe: Fire-In-The-Piehole Being the Scribe is often tougher than it seems. After all, the events that we describe week in, week out are broadly identical:   1.       Run to a bar 2.       Drink beer   It’s not rocket surgery. Still, each time we are required to come up with some original way of describing this repetition. To be fair, there are some distinguishing factors that make our job a little easier:  the trail might be different, the bar might be different or the beer might be different.   On this particular occasion, none of those things is true. The hare, the start, the trail*, the bar and the beer were all the same as they were for the St Patrick’s Day Hash in 2007. So, at this point, I could do some gag where I just include the write-up from the previous year. However, the problem is that I already did that…last year. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, for the third year on the trot we have the same hash. So, as a public service, remember to print off this handy cheat sheet for next year’s trail:   1.       From the start, head up 5th Ave and into the Park. 2.       Take a wander up the Mall. 3.       I hear Belvedere Castle has nice views at this time of year. 4.       The great lawn resembles a shamrock leaf…and a large circle jerk: don’t be fooled. 5.       If you’re above the 85th Street Transverse, you’ve gone too far north. 6.       If in doubt at a...

NAWWH3 #135

New Amsterdam Winter Wednesday #135 Date: January 18, 2006             Start: Front St. and South St.             Pre-lube: Heartland Brewery             On-in: Jeremy’s             Hares: Fuck Me I’m Gay (FMIG) and Kerry             (Virgin) Scribe: Jenn FMIG’s co-hare actually showed up this time which was a good thing because he needed to break his “Manhattan curse”. He succeeded with a super-secret unmarked beer check!   As a slow and dumb pack whore I can’t provide the exact details on where the trail went. One check was at the Wall St bull. We were in the WTC Path Station when I saw a check and spotted an arrow that a blind man on crutches could have beaten me to. I loudly and proudly shouted “on-on”. Don Wannabe was cumming up from behind and snidely commented “did you mean…ON-ONE?”   The check on Chambers St. was where the fun began. Cries of “The Patriot” were heard far and wide. Eventually Dave B., Steamer, Eric (Alaska guy), and me somehow became the FRBs while the arrow that “falsely” maneuvered everyone else into the Patriot led to a surprise beer check. Whom do you ask paid for the beer? Why it was our very own Sideshow Bob and Flaccido Domingo who I later heard were “doing an interview” (?) at the bar when the hashers came in. The four of us continued, with Eric diligently marking the trail and almost getting arrested when a security guard spotted him marking in front of the federal plaza building. No big surprises for the remainder of the trail.   I volunteered myself for the first down-down...

NAWW #133

{mosimage}New Amsterdam Winter Wednesday #133 Run #: 133 Date: Dec 21, 2005 Start: Dewey’s Flatiron on 5th Ave. btw 25th and 26th On-in: Plug Uglies on 3rd Ave. btw 20th and 21st Hare(s): Tim and Assglider (with adult supervision from Danny) Scribe: Tim Virgins and virgin hares share common concerns as the big event approaches: Will there be pain? Will it take too long? Will I be doing it by myself – again? Will we cross trails? Unfortunately all these fears, and more, were realized on first trail. The pain started before the trail was even set. As a result of showing off 8 minute-something times at 15K races every weekend, Assglider was limping around like a 40 year-old point guard, and was near-useless at setting trail. At one point we walked so slowly that we seemed to go backwards in time, which explains how Steva ended up running last week’s FMIG’s trail for 2 miles. In fact, the on-in seemed vaguely familiar too… Assglider came to around 14th street, which is why Irving Plaza was the best marked part of the trail. Frankly, we didn’t expect many hashers would show up due to the transit strike, but were surprised to have a pretty decent turnout. Since everyone – everyone except us, since we drove in – was going to get most of their exercise just getting to the pre-lube, it made sense to us to have at least 4 checks and 3 back-checks on trail. Most potential on-ins were booked for Christmas parties where people actually pay full price and spend money. We were close to having an...
